The GMAT™ Preparation
GMAT™
The GMAT™ Focus Edition is a specialised examination distinguished by its distinct format, strict time constraints, and comprehensive range of essential skills. With an average time allocation of just 2 minutes per question, test-takers face a significant challenge. The assessment covers a wide array of proficiencies, necessitating adeptness in various areas. Therefore, achieving a high score on the GMAT™ Focus Edition demands targeted preparation tailored to the unique demands of the exam. Institutions such as Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin (UCD), or University College Cork (UCC), require a GMAT score.
Conceived by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) in McLean, Virginia, USA, the GMAT™ Focus Edition, established in 1953, was developed to address the global need for a standardised assessment of students’ academic readiness for business school enrolment. Administered in 96 countries and utilised by 3,000 business schools worldwide, comprising those in Dublin, the GMAT™ serves as a consistent international benchmark for performance. While evaluating analytical, quantitative, and verbal skills, the exam does not gauge traits such as motivation, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, or interpersonal abilities.
The GMAT™ sections
Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section aims to assess your foundational understanding of algebra and arithmetic, along with your capacity to apply this knowledge to resolve diverse problems. Comprising 21 Problem-Solving inquiries, this section evaluates your mathematical comprehension and problem-solving proficiencies.
These questions necessitate a firm grasp of fundamental arithmetic operations and basic algebraic principles. The focus lies on your aptitude for logical reasoning and analytical thinking rather than on advanced mathematical expertise. Success in this segment hinges more on your ability to think critically and approach problems systematically.
It is essential to highlight that the use of calculators is prohibited in this section. Your performance relies on your mental arithmetic skills and problem-solving acumen to navigate the questions effectively. This limitation aims to further evaluate your capability to tackle and resolve problems using essential mathematical concepts and logical reasoning without external aids.
Verbal Reasoning
This segment evaluates your proficiency in reading comprehension, reasoning, and argument analysis through 23 questions dedicated to Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Reading Comprehension inquiries evaluate your capacity to comprehend vocabulary and statements, discern logical connections, make inferences, and track the progression of quantitative ideas. Specifically, you will be tested on identifying main ideas, supporting details, inferences, applications, logical structure, and style.
Critical Reasoning questions gauge your skill in constructing, evaluating, and analysing arguments, as well as developing or critiquing action plans. These questions are centred on brief passages, typically under 100 words, and necessitate selecting the option that most effectively bolsters or weakens an argument, elucidates a flaw, or offers robust backing or refutation to the argument. Proficiency in the subject matter is not a prerequisite.
Data Insights
The Data Insights section assesses your capacity to analyse and interpret data within business contexts, evaluating essential digital and data literacy proficiencies. Comprising 20 questions, this segment necessitates assessing graphic, numeric, and verbal data to facilitate informed decision-making, with an on-screen calculator at your disposal.
Within this section, you will encounter various question types :
- Data Sufficiency: Evaluates your aptitude in determining the sufficiency of data to resolve quantitative issues.
- Multi-Source Reasoning: Engages you in analysing data from textual passages, tables, and visual aids to pinpoint inconsistencies, draw inferences, or establish relevance.
- Table Analysis: Challenges your ability to scrutinise tabular data to unearth pertinent information or conditions.
- Graphics Interpretation: Assesses your skill in deciphering diverse graphical data representations to discern relationships and draw conclusions.
- Two-Part Analysis: Tests your proficiency in resolving intricate problems that entail quantitative, verbal, or a blend of both analyses across a broad spectrum of content.

How’s the test conducted ?
Prospective candidates must be a minimum of 13 years old to register online for the test. The test can be taken once every 16 days, up to five times per year, with a maximum of eight attempts allowed. The examination fee varies based on the testing method, with on-site testing priced at 275€ and online administration at 300€. Additional fees apply for late modifications or cancellations. The test duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes. The GMAT™ test is divided into three sections – Quantitative, Verbal, and Data Insights – each lasting 45 minutes. Test takers have the flexibility to select the order in which they tackle these sections.
The test consists of 64 questions, with 21 in Quantitative, 23 in Verbal, and 20 in Data Insights. Each section is scored out of 90 before being converted into a composite score. Time management is critical, as answering all questions within the time limit significantly impacts the final score. The maximum score that candidates can achieve is 805 points.
It is essential not to rush through initial questions, as the test’s adaptive nature heavily penalises such actions. Incorrect answers do not incur penalties, emphasising the importance of attempting all questions.
Employing a Computer-Adaptive Test (CAT) format, the GMAT™ adjusts question difficulty based on the test-taker’s performance and allows for answer revisions up to three times per section. Noteworthy changes include replacing the Geometry and Sentence Correction sections with a new Data Insights segment.
Emphasise the enhancement of weaker subject areas and acquaint yourself with the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format by practising under timed conditions and utilising the review and edit functionalities.
