The Bocconi test assesses candidates’ proficiency in advanced mathematics, numerical reasoning, English text comprehension, and critical analysis under stringent time constraints. Mere comprehension of the subject matter is insufficient; a strategic approach is imperative to optimise success within the allocated timeframe. Attaining a high academic or school level does not ensure success in the Bocconi test due to its unique requirements.
Effective from 2023, the Bocconi test prohibits revisiting questions. Candidates receive 1 point for each correct response and incur a deduction of 0.2 points for every incorrect answer (0.33 for critical analysis queries). Unanswered questions do not result in point deductions. Candidates falling below a score of 17 out of 50 face elimination from the selection process. Typically, successful candidates achieve scores ranging from 30 to 45 out of 50.

Structure of the Bocconi Test
Undergraduate Program Admission
The examination comprises a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) encompassing a blend of advanced high school mathematics concepts, logic puzzles, and English reading passages. It encompasses 50 questions to be completed within a total timeframe of 75 minutes.
These questions are categorised as follows, with each category offering five potential answer choices :
- Mathematics (28 questions) : Encompassing diverse mathematical domains such as algebra, function analysis, geometry, combinations, logarithms, exponents, probability, and statistics.
- English Reading Comprehension (11 questions) : Involving the comprehension of brief English texts on subjects like economics, history, politics, and sciences.
- Numerical Reasoning (6 questions) : Evaluating candidates’ capacity to interpret and apply mathematical information effectively.
- Critical Analysis (5 questions) : Focused on assessing candidates’ problem-solving abilities, particularly in identifying pertinent information and comprehending its application. It is noteworthy that critical analysis questions offer only three answer choices each.
The questions are presented in a random order, implying that a candidate could encounter a math question followed by a reading passage or encounter a series of five consecutive reading passages. Candidates scoring below 17 will be disqualified automatically.
Structure of the Bocconi Test
Graduate Program Admission
To gain admission to a master’s program, successful completion of the Bocconi exam is required. This examination comprises 40 multiple-choice questions spanning three key domains: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and data comprehension.
Verbal Reasoning encompasses three question types :

- Reading Comprehension : These queries evaluate your capacity to comprehend and analyse information from provided passages, necessitating a precise understanding of the text’s meaning and details.
- Data/Statements : This segment requires you to assess the validity of statements based on the given data, assessing your logical reasoning abilities.
- Critical Verbal Reasoning : Questions of this nature prompt you to scrutinise brief passages and respond to inquiries that gauge your critical reasoning capabilities.
In approaching these questions, it is essential to presume the accuracy of the statements within the passage and contemplate the logical implications of the information provided.
- Quantitative Reasoning evaluates your aptitude in solving mathematical problems and applying mathematical principles to practical scenarios, covering topics such as algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry.
- Data Comprehension comprises 16 questions designed to evaluate your proficiency in interpreting data presented in various formats like graphs or tables, enabling you to answer subsequent queries effectively.
Graduate Program Admission
The Bocconi test is a multiple-choice examination comprising 40 questions to be completed within an 80-minute timeframe. The test is segmented into three primary sections: verbal reasoning (14 questions), data comprehension (16 questions), and quantitative reasoning (10 questions).
Unlike before, candidates are now unable to skip questions for later review. Each correct response earns candidates 1 point, while an incorrect answer results in a deduction of 0.25 points.
Candidates failing to achieve a score of 10 or above will face automatic disqualification.

To submit an application for a bachelor’s program, the application dossier should encompass the following components :

Equivalents to the Bocconi Test
The SAT Test
The SAT test, with a duration of approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, evaluates the problem-solving skills of examinees. Similar to the Bocconi test, it comprises two sections : Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, both in multiple-choice format. This assessment targets essential academic proficiencies among high school seniors, emphasising the importance of comprehensive readiness given the stringent time constraints for each question.
Score
Each section is scored on a scale from 200 to 800, culminating in a total score of 1600 points.
Test Administration
Since January 2023, candidates have had the option to take the SAT in a digital format. This test is available six times annually at diverse testing centres nationwide.
Test Cost
Starting August 24, 2024, the registration fee for the SAT test will be $68 (currently $60).
The ACT Test
The ACT test has a duration of approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, comprising five distinct sections. The English section spans 45 minutes, the Mathematics section extends for one hour, the Reading section is allotted 35 minutes, and the Science section also lasts 35 minutes. Additionally, there is an optional ACT Plus Writing section that lasts 40 minutes.
Score
Each section is graded on a scale of 1 to 36, culminating in a total score out of 36, which is the average of all sections.
Test Administration
The ACT test is conducted at various test centres worldwide. These test centre locations are assigned by ACT, Inc. and can encompass high schools, colleges, or other educational establishments. Students select a test centre based on their convenience, considering factors such as proximity and availability.
Test Cost
The cost of the ACT exam without the Writing section is $68. Opting to include the Writing section increases the fee to $93.
The GMAT and GRE Tests
The GMAT™ and GRE exams hold the same standing as the Bocconi test at the master’s level, a qualification duly acknowledged by the university.
The GMAT™ Test
The GMAT™ is a computerised exam that consists of three main sections. First, there is an Analytical Writing Assessment section, followed by an Integrated Reasoning section and a Quantitative section focused on mathematical skills. Finally, there is a section dedicated to assessing the candidate’s verbal skills.
The exam lasts a total of 3 hours and 30 minutes:
- Quantitative Reasoning: 21 questions, 45 minutes
- Verbal Reasoning: 23 questions, 45 minutes
- Data Sufficiency: 20 questions, 45 minutes
Score
The GMAT™ is scored on a scale of up to 805 points. This total score is calculated based on the candidate’s performance in the different sections of the test.
Test Administration
You can take the test online or at one of the authorised testing centers.
Test Cost
The cost of taking the test is $275 for in-center testing and $300 for online testing.
The GRE Test
The GRE test evaluates verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills. The verbal reasoning section tests comprehension and analysis of written texts, as well as the ability to draw logical conclusions. The quantitative reasoning section evaluates mathematical skills, including problem-solving and data interpretation. The analytical writing section includes two tasks: analysing a given argument and developing a personal perspective on a specific issue.
Scores
Each section of the GRE test is scored separately. For verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning, the maximum score is 170 for each part. For analytical writing, the maximum score is 6 points.
Test Administration
You can take the test in digital or paper format at one of the ETS GLOBAL authorised centres.

How long should one allocate for test preparation?
It is recommended to commence test preparation at least three months ahead, investing 3 to 5 hours per week in study sessions. What is the testing procedure, and what are the associated costs?
In safeguarding the test’s credibility, Bocconi collaborates with an external partner, Giunti Psychometrics. Test takers must complete the assessment in a controlled environment with their webcam and microphone activated, while monitoring software is installed on their device. A smartphone should be positioned behind them to record their surroundings through a designated application, ensuring no external aid is received. The examination fee for each attempt is 60 euros.
Admission to Bocconi is structured into three distinct sessions:
- An Early Session for first-year candidates
- The Winter Session spanning from November to January’s conclusion for seniors and those considering a change in academic direction
- The Spring Session from March to April, catering to the same applicants but with limited availability (5 to 10% of seats). Results are disclosed in March and May, respectively. Candidates have the option to reapply in subsequent sessions following a rejection.
