How the HPAT Exam is conducted ?
The HPAT exam follows a structured process as outlined below:
- Registration : Prospective candidates are required to complete the registration process within specified timelines, typically done online via the official exam platform; commonly in November.
- Venue and Schedule : Upon successful registration, candidates are informed about the examination location and date, (in Dublin). HPAT exams are commonly conducted annually at designated test centres.
- Examination Day : Candidates are expected to present themselves at the assigned exam center at the designated time, accompanied by valid identification for verification purposes.
Test Format :
- The HPAT exam is predominantly computer-based and comprises various sections designed to evaluate critical thinking, interpersonal understanding, and the capacity to comprehend and analyse written content. Though, the examination is conducted at designated ACER-selected centres in Dublin on specified dates for students who are unable to undertake it remotely on their personal computers.
- Duration : The HPAT exam generally spans between 2.5 to 3 hours in duration. However, slight variations may occur based on the particular exam version, additional guidelines, or breaks incorporated.
- Result Dissemination : Following the conclusion of the exam, candidates can anticipate receiving their results within weeks. Result notifications are commonly dispatched via email or traditional mail services.
The structure :
The HPAT is structured into three distinct sections, each dedicated to a specific aspect of the medical profession that candidates will be exposed to during their training. The examination is presented in a multiple-choice format, alleviating the need for written or argumentative responses. Moreover, certain questions are complemented by visual aids and additional contextual information for clarity.
The HPAT comprises the following segments :
- Logical Reasoning and Problem-Solving : This section encompasses 42 questions focusing on problem-solving, data interpretation, and logical reasoning, incorporating elements of mathematics, statistics, and physics.
- Interpersonal Understanding : Essential qualities in the medical field such as empathy and the capacity to comprehend others are evaluated through 42 scenario-based questions involving the interpretation of phrases and their connotations.
- Non-verbal Reasoning : With an emphasis on identifying patterns and trends to deduce conclusions from extensive data, this segment comprises 30 questions concentrating on recognising sequences and understanding cycles.
- Written English : Applicants for the MSc Occupational Therapy (Professional Qualification) and the MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Professional Qualification) at the University of Limerick must not only complete the HPAT exam but also undertake a one-hour Written English component.
Candidates are required to answer a total of 114 questions within the stipulated time frame of 2 hours and 30 minutes, allowing an average of approximately 79 seconds per question.
